Avatar: The Last Airbender: Flames Were Extinguished, and The Benders Did Not Make

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

This review was late. I undertsand it was late and for that I’m sorry. But do you understand how hard it was to write this thing up, and NOT make it sound like I was a fanboy, or going all out and ripping it to shreds? With a movie like “The Last Airbender,” you have to be careful and not overdo it, otherwise all of your points are going to be wasted and thrown into obscurity. Unfortunately, I feel as if I did just that… or maybe because of Shyamalan, it’s the final TWIST. (more…)

Toy Story 3: The Toys Came Out to Play

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

I know what you’re thinking: “But… you said you were off… AND a second review this week?” Yes and yes. I know what I said but I’m not posting, am I? HA! Put that in your pipe and smoke it. Anyway, I was asked to write up something, in lieu of that abomination that was Jonah Hex. So, I got you a little bit of Toy Story. Let me tell you – fantastic. (And I don’t say that often.) (more…)

Jonah Hex: A Face Isn’t the Only Thing Left Scarred

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Thankfully, I came into this movie knowing absolutely nothing about this film. If I had, I think I would have been more irate than I was walking out of it, but who’s counting? Here I am, after wasting a nice amount of my time at the theater and enduring a considerable test of patience. In the end, all you need to know is a case of beer or a fifth of your favorite alcohol will not make this movie any better. (more…)

The Karate Kid: You Forgot to Just Sweep the Leg

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Alright so I had my choice between The A-Team, and The Karate Kid. Both of which I actually grew up with and it more or less shaped who I became today, and both would actually make me very happy regardless. I mean, they were going to end up being entertaining, just one very campy and action-packed, and the other was heartfelt and… kinda action-packed? In any case, I went with the one that had the best memories. I mean, who didn’t do the crane technique to your siblings or friends growing up? But remember: this is a representation more to the term of Kung-fu. So similar story, but not really.

Splice: Never feed your Mogwai after Midnight

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

I’ll tell it to you folks right now – this is nothing like what you are expecting. I know that from the trailers and from the ads, you are expecting something along the lines of a Species or a Mimic copy. Well you’re wrong, so shut the hell up about it. The movie is nothing like that, other than the fact that the main character is not exactly human and was slightly modified for science. But I mean, when does that NOT happen… Heroes did it for like three seasons and nobody gave a shit. In any case, hit the button and press play.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time – It’s Always Sunny in The Desert

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Walking into this movie, I had my doubts. Yes it looked pretty but it was, yet again, another video game movie done for the effects. Yes, Disney has a great visuals department and they can spin a yarn, but give them a pre-existing franchise and then you have concerns. Sadly, my concerns were correct: this movie is nothing like the games. Yet that doesn’t make it a bad film, just a film just to watch when you feel like either bashing something into nothingness, or when you have nothing else better to watch.

Iron Man 2: Everything That Glitters Should Be Gold

Monday, May 10th, 2010

It’s a scary thing, coming into a second comic book film after so many sequels have had their chance in the sun and burned. Look at “Spiderman 3,” “X-Men: The Last Stand,” and either of the “Batman” films after Tim Burton left the director’s seat. So with that thought in mind, director Jon Favreau worked to make sure “Iron Man 2” lived up to its predecessor.  As far as sequels, it could have done better. But looking at it from a comic’s perspective, Iron Man hit the mark.

Kick-Ass: Ink Runs Thicker Than Blood

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Like most in the internet community, I’ve been looking forward to this movie for a few months. The way they have been selling it – as a satirical look on the comic community and overabundance of action flicks – tugged at that little pit I call a heart. So, watching the movie, I enjoyed it. It wasn’t a bad movie that some made it out to be, but it wasn’t something spectacular. Yes, I was laughing for the majority of the film and yes I thought the action sequences were very well put, but that is just about it. If I were not a nerd, then I would let it fall to the wayside, but seeing as how I could rattle off every bit of Green Lantern lore… that ain’t the case. So this one is a little different to gauge to say the least.

She’s Out Of My League: In Bed at Two With a Ten, She’s Staying That Way

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Two reviews in one day? I must be crazy?! (or made of money) After I sat through that horrible rendition of Clash of the Titans, the missus and I had a night to ourselves and stayed in for this one. Though not the best date movie, it was better than seeing the movie of the same title. Still, it had its moments and Lord knows I can deprive you folks of anything intellectual. So hit the break and listen to what I have to say for the second time.

The Hero For All Ages – Paper Man

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Ryan Reynolds currently is gearing up and getting his bling on to play DC’s Green Lantern, but before that he was another kind of hero: the kind that was all in the mind of a child-like novelist. Paper Man has been hitting the indie circuit for more than a year now, finally hitting the big screen sometime soon (unreleased summer date). There hasn’t been a whole lot of commotion over the film during the screenings, which can be good or bad depending, but from watching the trailer, Reynolds is enough for me to go see it.

If you look past the bland, pinging music and simple narration, the story is about Jeff Daniels’ character trying to essentially grow up and live in the world, while using Emma Stone‘s wit and quirky charm. Where Reynolds comes in is as Paper Man, an imaginative creation of Daniels that is the main character of his unsold novels. Popping in with all the right attitudes and actions befitting a stereotypical and cookie-cutter hero, he fits the roll well just by appearance alone.

It’s really the little touches that make me want to watch this film: the couch made out of books, and Daniels learning how to ride a bike. All of these tiny little elements seem like they mesh into something that’s part Juno, Part I’m Here, and a dash of Lars and the Real Girl.
